As Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro (called Reuel in Exodus 2), he saw something amazing. He saw a bush burning, but not consumed. Approaching the bush, he heard the words, “Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5). Why was Moses commanded to remove his shoes? He was commanded to do so because the place that he was approaching was not common ground. It was not like every other place. In fact, it was a special place. It was the place where the Lord spoke to Moses. The removal of the shoes was to indicate the reverence that was to be in the heart, as he drew near to God.
