The church in Sardis appears to have been in a dreadful state of self-righteousness, the worst kind of hypocrisy. Christ tells them he has the seven Spirits of God, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the Helper, the Advocate, the one badly needed in the church of Sardis. They had a name they lived, but were dead, yet, there was a godly remnant among them, so there is hope, if they will repent. Those who are ashamed of Christ, he will be ashamed of them, but those who confess Christ, those who overcome, Christ will happily acknowledge them on the judgment day.
